Course Qualification
Learn how to play Golf
The course qualification (“Platzreife”) is mandatory in most golf clubs to be allowed to play on the course. It certifies that you have acquired the basic theoretical knowledge of the game as well as a minimum level of practical ability. This “driver’s license for the golf course” is also required at Klostergut Jakobsberg in order to play on our facilities.
In our course qualification program, you will learn all theoretical and practical fundamentals needed to pass the exam. Practice balls and rental clubs are provided, though you are welcome to use your own equipment. Since regular practice is essential when learning to play golf, you may use our practice facilities freely and at no cost for the entire duration of the course.
How long does it take for a beginner to access the course?
The course qualification program lasts around two months and takes place in small groups of up to six participants at fixed training times. After the two-month program and the successful exam, beginners are permitted to play on the golf course.

What you need to know before starting golf
Observing golf etiquette is expected from all players, whether beginners or advanced. While violations do not always lead to penalties, they can result in point deductions or even disqualification in tournaments. Above all, the rules ensure fair, smooth, and safe play — and are an essential part of the course qualification.
In principle, golf etiquette is based on safety, consideration, care for the course, and a steady pace of play.
For a smooth pace of play
- Record your scores at the next tee, and leave the green immediately after putting.
- If the fairway ahead is clear, allow waiting players behind you to play through.
For protecting the course
- Replace divots and rake the bunker after use.
- Protect the hole edge when replacing the flagstick.
For consideration & safety
- Do not speak to players during their swing and remain outside their field of vision.
- Play your ball only when the group ahead is out of range.
A “round of golf” refers to playing 18 holes, which is why 18-hole courses are the most common format — though courses with more or fewer holes also exist. In general, the number of holes on a course is always divisible by 3, and usually by 6. This is why you will find 9-hole or 36-hole courses, but never courses with 24 or 25 holes.
But how long does a round of golf take?
A full round of 18 holes should not take more than 4.5 hours. Most players aim to finish their round in under 4 hours, which is why maintaining a steady pace of play is such an important part of golf etiquette.
The costs of learning to play golf consist of several components, which can vary significantly from one golf facility to another. In addition to the mandatory course qualification (“Platzreife”), you may incur costs for additional golf courses and private lessons. To play on the course, you must also pay the green fee — essentially the course fee or entry fee.
Many golfers become members of a golf club in order to participate in tournaments and other events. Membership comes with ongoing costs, but these are often offset by numerous benefits, such as reduced green fees.
Finally, there is the investment in your own equipment, where prices can vary widely. Your equipment includes golf clubs, balls, tees, a golf bag, a trolley, and appropriate golf clothing. You should also check the dress code of the facility you plan to play at, as dress requirements can differ considerably from club to club.

SOME THEORY FIRST Our Video Golf Course
To play successfully on the golf course, you need to master a variety of shot techniques. Our PGA golf instructor, Patrick Limbecker, has taken the time to introduce you to the most important fundamental shots.
|
The putt is the final — and for many the most important — shot in golf. It is played on the green with a putter and is ideally intended to hole the ball. Patrick shows you how it’s done. |
The bunker shot is one that many golfers struggle with, as most players find it challenging to escape the sandy surface! |
|
The pitch is a shot of roughly 30 to 50 meters in which the ball stays in the air almost the entire time before landing on the green. |
The tee shot is the first stroke played on every hole and is designed for maximum distance. |
|
The chip is a short approach shot played around the green and is essential for precise shots from close range. |
